Wiki Offline — A Wikipedia Experience App Reviews

Fast Wiki- No internet- this is good!

I use Wikipedia quite often to get quick info on a variety of subjects throughout the day. Sometimes the connection speeds can be slow or disrupted due to weather or peak hour internet use. Wiki Offline is quick , so quick , that I am still focussed when the page pops up and I can learn more, faster, anywhere. The bookmarks can be customized and the interface here is simple, friendly and useable. It takes 3.5 GB space on the hard disk but this is the human body of knowledge at your fingertips and is well worth 10 bucks.

Good app but still rough on the edges

This application is something that should cost 5 bucks. Its a mere front end to Wikipedia, and not precisely a trouble free app. The reason why I say that is because the other 5 should actually go to Wikipedia to help those guys out since they are creating the content. But focusing more on the technical aspect, there are a few bugs in this app that are very easy to correct in programming. The fact that they tell you, go download something from this address, rename the files and copy them to a hidden directory (which kind of needs to be done from the Terminal app) really leaves a lot to be desired. This is something that could even be written as a shell script.

Good app with great support

I love this app when Im researching something. Allows you to export text without the pictures to print, can change the font in-app to any font in your fontbook. I know its not very tree friendly but sometimes it is nice to have a paper copy I can highlight or scribble on. I had an issue where the app would force-close immediately on startup, however I received a response the same day I contacted tech support by e-mail with a fix that solved the problem.

Doesnt Work on the Retina MacBook Pro.

The Retina MacBook Pro has been out for nearly two months, but Avocado Hills still hasnt fixed scrolling on it in Wiki Offline. Its basically useless. Ill update this review once theyve fixed it.

Best app ever!

This app is so useful! I live in Cuba where online access is extremely limited. Having this app at my fingertips has been such a joy. Its incredibly well organized, simple and works beautifully. Thanks so much Avocado Hill, keep up the amazing work. I personally very rarely notice any glitches--if there are any, its sometimes that the font turns a little weird in certain sections of the text within an article. But, this is so rare and the content is still legible.

When I open it and write a word in the search box,it crashed!

When I open it and write a word in the search box,it crashed! I dont know why?

No Scrolling!

Cant scroll on MBP with retina display! Support said its because the program thinks my computer is iPad3.Considering its running Mac OS X and not iOS that sounds like a weird way to program it, to say the least. I will update my review when they fix, but right now it is unuseable. The App Store really needs a refund function...

Doesnt even start

Open the application, the window comes up and then it beachballs for about 5 minutes and runs up the processor. When Im about to give up it calms down and brings up an overlay asking if I want to sign up to get e-mails about the companys other products, however before I can even click on it it crashes. Tried twice, got the same thing. Trashing it.

Retina Macbok Pro Users Beware

I am sorely dissapionted with this application. I purchased the app several months ago to accompany my new macbook pro with retina display. At the time, I was not too bothered by the lack of scroll support - bugs happen. I was also told via email from the developer that an update was in the works. HOWEVER, THIS APPLICATION REMAINS DISFUNCTIONAL ON THE MACBOOK PRO WITH RETINA DISPLAY. An update has not been released; rMBP users still cannot scroll. Further, there is still no indication of this anywhere. The developers have not indicated that thier app simply does not work on some machines. Even if I didnt own a rMBP, I would not support this developer. Their service to those who have paid for their software is atrocious.

Scrolling with rMBP

I purchased this app in June and immediately realized that while optimized for retina display it is unusable. It is not possible to view any content since the application does not (recognize the trackpad?) [Impossible to scroll in any direction]. I was told an update was being prepared in June however its now November and nothing has been updated. This application will not function correctly on a MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

Wheres the scrolling?

This is completely useless to me without scrolling capability.

Fixed old bugs, new bugs introduced

The old issue of not being able to use the app with a retina display has been fixed however now Im no longer able to search for anything. It is even less useful then before!

An aweful update!

before the latest update, this app just crashed randomly, but this update has fixed up nothing but crashing all the time!

I think its almost perfect.

I think the app is great, but I wish they would update file more often. I use it for information on a current events at a speech and debate tournament, and a lot of them are not there.

Great Idea, app is stable, well-presened and priced reasonably

First, I really love the idea of this app. I enjoy Wikipedia a great deal. It is wonderful for getting quick background information on many topics, as well as more in-depth coverage in many cases. My only problem is that I can get lost in Wiki following one link to another only resurfacing 90 minutes later. So I often have to force myself away b/c life beacons. However, when traveling w/ no internter connection I can let myelf go and wander through a many topics. Therefore, a full-scale offline version of Wikipedia is a great gift. Bottom Line: Great idea. Well-executed. Price is reasonable if this is what you want. Oh, and stop whiing about the cost of database updates. They are dirt cheap for what they provide, and they are large and therefore expensive to maintain and send.

Great but still needs LaTeX support

Without the ability to display equations science, math and other technical articles are unreadable. It wont even load them with an internet connection. They are about all I look up on Wikipedia so Wiki Offline dosent see any use on my computer.

Buggy App

Lots of bugs, never seem to get fixed, some of which are documented by other reviewers. Ive had much better results with with Kiwix.

Great concept, faulty app

Wiki offline is a great idea. It is still too raw, though, in a way that you would expect from a Beta app. It crashes often, cannot locate some articles, and has functions missing. I originally gave it 3 stars, but it is just too buggy. 2 stars.

Handy app when internet is spotty or nonexistent

I often find myself in places with bad or no internet connection so I really enjoy having offline access to wikipedia. The articles have the pictures removed (probably to conserve HD space) but are still very informative and have working hyperlinks between the articles. And if you want the pictures for a specific article you can use Wiki Offline with an internet connection and go to that article. The pictures are saved so you can see them offline after that. My only complaint is that some words and symbols get removed from the text of certain articles so that it can be confusing.

I will change my rate after few monthes.

Update my review and rate: Now I reduce two more stars from my previous rate. The reason is the desktop is much worse than iOS version. It is elusive for me why the quality of desktop is this worse. The search function is not working properly from time to time. Some of the entries could be easily searched in iOS version, but not on desktop version. I doubt the data management system is not the same as on iOS version. So I will change my rate to two, as this app is still usable but frequently not works properly. I don’t recommand this app for anyone. If you trully need an offline wiki library, I highly recommand the iOS version.
